Coral reefs are vibrant underwater cities built by colonies of tiny animals called coral polyps. They thrive in warm, shallow, sunlit waters and support an astonishing variety of marine life.
Though they occupy less than 1% of the ocean floor, reefs shelter about a quarter of all known marine species. Rising sea temperatures and ocean acidification now endanger these fragile ecosystems worldwide.
